Telecommunications for Small and Medium
Business - Broadband Data Services
Dedicated Broadband Internet Access
As your business grows and you
host a web site at your location and have high volumes of e-mail, transactions,
and Web related traffic you will need the higher capacity Internet
access provided by dedicated service. "Dedicated" service provides
a permanent, "always on", connection between your business and the
Internet. The two most popular ways of providing dedicated Internet
service are Digital Subscriber Line ( DSL ) and T1 - the following
are brief descriptions of these services:
. Digital Subscriber Line (
DSL ) - there are two major types of DSL service to be considered for business
applications. The first is Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line Service
( ADSL ). This service is enabled by a very high frequency signal (above
the frequencies audible to the human ear) transmitted over a regular phone
line. The phone line used for DSL retains all normal voice telephone capabilities
as well as carrying the DSL signal. The service requires a special modem
that may be leased or purchased from the service provider in order to connect
it to a computer or LAN. Asymmetrical means the service downloads at a
substantially higher speed (~640 kbs) down than it uploads (90 kbs) e.g.
its great for "surfing" but
not so good for connecting a Web server to the internet. While this service
is primarily used for residential applications, it can work for businesses
with moderate requirements and low growth. Additionally, some service providers
are offering higher speed versions at higher costs that may be more suitable
for business. The service costs from $50 to $190 per month depending on
speed and may have an installation charge of around $100.

Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line Service provides
the same high speed for uploads and downloads and requires a dedicated
circuit of its own. It is substantially more expensive than ADSL (two
to three times as expensive) and is more appropriate for most business
applications. Because of the substantial expense associated with SDSL,
many businesses elect to take the next step up to T1 Internet access.
. T1 Dedicated Broadband
Internet Access - this service provides
1.5 megabits per second speed uploading and downloading from the Internet
and will require hardware to connect it to your LAN or servers. This service
can meet the needs of most business applications. The cost of a T1 connection
will be ~$500 if your business is in a city. It could be $700 or more if
your business is in a suburban or rural area. One-time installation charges
run from $500 to more than $1000 depending upon the work required. The
cost of T1 service can be substantially reduced by "bundling" it with your
local and LD service - more on this approach later.
Hosting Services and Bundles: Bundled
Internet services represent an economical way to develop your business'
presence on the Internet. Many of these services offer far more than
a basic hosted (the service owns and maintains the computer hardware
and software that provides your Web site) Web site. Many include Web
site development capabilities, Domain Name Service ( DNS ) to provide "vanity" Web
site names, e-Commerce (credit card and billing services, shopping carts,
etc.), e-mail addresses, and many other capabilities. Prices for Web
hosting bundles range from $5.00 per month to $200 or more dependent
on disk size and data transfer requirements as well as the features
required.
Other Data Services: There
are varieties of additional Internet and data services available for
business ( T1, DS1, T3, DS3 ). Private line and frame relay services
that can be used to build private networks that connect multiple sites
together. A Virtual Private Network ( VPN ) has many of the same capabilities
but is implemented over the Internet and is less expensive. Most of these
services are beyond the requirements of the typical small to medium sized
business and therefore we will not spend any time detailing them.
